Extraordinary Perseverance

The two words Auction and Collection are tightly associated but completely different. At the moment of being completed, the artworks with an invisible nature depict culture in detail; the unique quality and tension provide collectors visual refinement.

With a remarkable vision, Mr. Jerry Chen Jen-I joined the auction industry in early 1990, which was the time when Asia underwent the initial stage of the art auction. To explore the history and traces of ancient Chinese art as well as promote the uniqueness and great value of Chinese artworks, Mr. Chen has adhered to his belief in the continuous browsing through the auction consulting industry with a mature form of business in the West by the self-learning process with communication and comprehension experiences. As he recalled, it was very difficult throughout the way. However, achievement takes experience and perseverance as well as keeping on trying after a failure. In the industry, professional knowledge is definitely the most important. Mr. Chen keeps his faith and reached his goal- “the driving force in the market for Asian artworks.”

The Beauty of Ancient Chinese Art

Asia’s first collection and auction advisor Mr. Jerry Chen Jen-I has kept his curiosity for art ever since childhood, including making paintings, visiting the museums of arts, admiring bottles and jars that were kept in the houses of his aboriginal classmates, etc.; his pursuit of wonderful things and natural environment comes from his natural-born personality. Over the years, Mr. Chen’s desire for pursuing art has been getting stronger; including studying dance as his major and stage lighting design as a minor at university, he has gradually combined his life with the aesthetic of art. With years of accumulation and progress, he has cultivated his intuitive art evaluation upon the curve lines that are extended from the body figures, shadows of tension in the space, the power and melody of the shapes; gradually, he has developed his quality and vision. When looking back on the progress, he’s surprised by his long way of being with art.

The Impact Brought by the Thousand-Year-Old Guqin

The collector Wang Shi-Xiang from Beijing and his beloved wife owned a Guqin before his demise; his wife sold her dowry to earn enough funds for the purchase of the Guqin because they’re eager for listening to the musical impact that existed 1,250 years ago. The couple involved the historical warmth into their decades of life, Mr. Wang Shi-Xiang enjoyed listening to his beloved wife’s performance. Although the Guqin is so old that the sound comes with a rustling, the music is so beautiful and harmonious. At the China Guardian Auction in 2003, it was sold at an extremely high price of RMB 8.91 million. This “Fuxi Guqin is called ‘Da Sheng Yi Yin’, from the Tang Dynasty to the year of De Bing Shen”, and the driving force behind it is Mr. Jerry Chen Jen-I; he said that about 20 Guqins made in the Tang Dynasty exist in the world, and more than ten of them are kept in the museum for display until they become ruined. Only this Guqin can be played, and it makes the best sound. At that time, he wanted to share the historical music of Guqin with the world, and he found a renowned Chinese ancient Guqin musician Mr. Gong Yi, who was in his 60 years of age. When Mr. Gong saw the ancient Guqin for the first time, his hands couldn’t help shaking and said, “Mr. Chen, can I play the Guqin in the production of the last recording in my life?” Mr. Chen replied, “Master, as long as you’re willing to perform with it, I’ll support you whatever you do!” In the following 9 years, they studied together for how to fix and maintain the Guqin; eventually, they found no ways. They’ve ever thought of an idea of trying to reduce the volume of the unpleasant noise from certain parts of the Guqin; however, throughout a music concern at night, the performer needs extremely high concentration, so it’s not possible to fulfill the idea. To the public, maybe it’s just a musical instrument, or production made in the Tang Dynasty, or a progress in music; but, it’s a short story about life to Mr. Chen, it’s readable experience and the nutrient for life. When the nutrients have been accumulated to the amount as abundant as the life-long experience, they become Mr. Chen’s unique collection in his lifetime.

A Talk about Chinese Contemporary Art

Besides being a consultant of artwork auction, Mr. Jerry Chen Jen-I is the CEO of CHUNZAI CULTURE LIMITED, which collaborates with craftsmen in the production of handmade furniture that features cultural virtue. When mentioning Chinese furniture, Mr. Chen said, “Culture is like a sheer of gauze that is hard to see through; the elegance of western culture is a soft quality as presented in the oil paintings. The Chinese way of elegance refers to cultivation; over thousands of years, Chinese furniture has never taken comfort into consideration, the comfort exists within cultivation.” Through the furniture made by Chunzai, he hopes to deliver the importance of Chinese contemporary design, integrates the thousand-year-old culture with the designs, and makes the essence reach to the residences of people who are in favor of “Chunzai”. When talking about the details of design, Mr. Chen said it humorously, “The manufacturing stage of furniture production is always suffering; from studying ancient books and reading the traditional design concepts, the careful material selection, and the communication with designers, the process is interesting, but bearing the responsibility of passing down culture is greatly significant” We are living in modern time, information provides us with speedy and interesting understanding of contemporary art. However, behind the art are the accumulated Chinese history; either in the material selection or the design, Mr. Chen has ever said that Chinese design is peaceful, vulnerable, generous, and warm with the application of painted bamboo and rattan. The tradition that has lasted hundreds of years can best describe Chen Jen-I, who has built up his world of favorite Chinese traditional art on his own over long years of development. At the same time browsing through history, he has never forgotten to pass on cultural essence and origin and drive the next generation with the inheritance of humanity and art.
