Immerse in space and enjoy a gravity-free tour of leisure—this is the JERICVERSE created by Singaporean singer Jeric Chen, a dedication to his fans. Like fulfilling his dream to visit space, he tries to make his fantasies come true in the vast world of NFT, a place where everything is possible.

All for the Creators

Last spring, Jeric launched his first NFT music piece “Forbidden City.” The auction carried out without prior notice and was bid up to $100,000 New Taiwanese Dollars, making him the second Asian NFT artist in the music industry who is gradually expanding the diversity of the Asian music market. In terms of making music, Jeric says that NFT has changed the way artists can gain exposure. Not only does it benefit new artists, but also breaks away from the limitations of agencies and music platforms, allowing inspiration to come to full bloom in lesser-known fields. The public is able to purchase their favorite NFTs and directly give their feedback to the artists. From his observations, Jeric realized that a lot of artists are having difficulty finding their entry way into the metaworld. In response to the dilemma of how crypto-wallet works, he chuckles and says, “It’s like swimming. Just give it a shot and try everything.” Like exploring a foreign nomansland, Jeric is enjoying the process of discoveries and the surprises it offers.

Slow and Three-Dimensional

In the wake of the pandemic, besides interacting with fans through Instagram and Facebook live, Jeric began to wonder if there are other ways to create a two-way communication—the concept behind JERICVERSE is thus born. Since last May, he began brainstorming and starting his production. Even with his background in engineering, he still found the project difficult to execute. Fortunately, a few months later, Jeric met a big company that was willing to provide him with the necessary R&D manpower and funding, which sped up the process of turning the image he had in mind into reality. In contrast to the usually thrilling game setting, he wanted to create an artistic space that runs on floatingly slow speed, so that every player who enters JERICVERSE can truly feel the meditating relaxation of the three-dimensional space. By adding visual elements and soundtrack he likes, Jeric hopes that once people enter his universe, they will forget about their troubles in reality and fully immerse themselves in a mesmerizing indulgence that will be hard to escape.

On Potential Pitfalls

With the development of NFT music continuing to rise, the potential problems behind it are also emerging. There had already been cases where music was made into NFT and sold online without consent of the original artist. Unfortunately, Jeric says such behavior isn’t surprising because the digital world cannot be measured by the standards of our reality, which is why those seemingly illegal but indestructible NFT works are scattered among the block chain. If the platforms are not implementing proper mechanisms to ensure source traceability, it will certainly create an array of legal loopholes. Speaking of the future of music and NFT, Jeric believes that it is possible to have virtual performances in the digital world. He even boldly predicts that ten years from now, virtual reality will be widely popularized in the world, similar to the development of cloud systems. “Ten years ago, there were no NFTs. Who knows what will happen in the next ten years?”
