Weaving Living Aesthetics with Interior Design

TRANSLATION | Eugenia Yang

Immersing in the rustic natural space, morphing stones with wooden materials, treating “people” as its core essence—the ideal living space for humans is thus created. Thinking back to her high school days spent gazing out the window, contemplating about space, Lisa Chang is an observer who pays close attention to details in order to precisely capture the client’s expectation and to create a comforting functional space. Interior design not only becomes a study of aesthetics, but also the art of listening to the sounds of life.

A Natural Order of Everything

A plain and static space seems to always be able to be reborn through the ingenious hands of the interior designer. How exactly do we find the perfect balance between creating surprising features and making them acceptable? This certainly becomes a challenge to the designer’s abilities. Based in Taichung, Lisa, the design director of Jazzy Space, had just finished her case with Akoni Steak. After rounds and rounds of listening and communicating with the owner, she finally settled on using white base tones for the restaurant’s interior. Having successfully flipped the public’s stereotypical impression on chain restaurants, Lisa received several awards with the project—the 2019 JCD International Design Award in Japan, the A’Design Award in Italy, American Alliance of Museums’s MUSE Award. Before that, she also received many awards with her three-story villa in Nantou, including the Asia Design Prize Finalist Award in Korea, bronze award for A’Design Award in Italy, and the IDA Design Award in America. Perhaps it is Lisa’s willingness to listen and observe that allowed the clashing of the designer’s thoughts and the client’s expectation to resonate with one another—creating spaces imbued with aesthetics, bringing even the smallest details to life. “Even with the different designing styles, you can still find certain elements that are similar, or even the same aesthetic ratios.” Unintentionally, she seems to have found the natural calling of her basis and is able to incorporate Jazzy Space into the different styles and details.

The Diligence of Incorporating Fashion

A reciprocal discussion with the professors, the opposite perspectives to showcase the diverging opinions on beauty, and the sparks between the clash of different aesthetics—these are the reasons Lisa continues to improve herself even after receiving so much recognition and so many awards. During our interview, it isn’t hard to understand her take on what is considered beautiful. “Fashion is fast-paced and ever-changing. And some parts of design are in fact closely connected to fashion. So in a way, interior design is also time-sensitive and changes according to what’s in style.” An active listener best exemplifies Lisa’s tender personality, while being observant is a significant factor. By incorporating brand new thoughts—building materials, trending elements, personal needs—into people’s lives, the deepened understanding generates inspirations that are heartfelt and considerate.

Never Forget, “People” is the Key

Lisa smiles and tells us that perhaps the one distinction of being a female designer is that she is wired with a motherly thoughtfulness and tends to pay more attention to the safety of the living space. Because of her family, she displays a different level of sensitivity when it comes to interior design. Readjusting her mindset to create everything out of love, Lisa expresses this tenderness that is indulged with love and proves to us how females are also able to establish an elegant confidence in the work field. In the meantime, we also noticed her diverse thoughts and accepting personality through her passion for jazz music and its versatile style—this is exactly why she named her firm after the music genre. With a style of layered affluence, Jazzy Space seems to represent the firm to take in the designer’s ideas and integrate them with the customer’s opinion. All in all, it is all about the “people.” Design accordingly to the nature of the space, and most importantly, prioritize the client’s comfort and satisfaction—the true definition of Lisa Chang’s work and the reason she continues to work with diligence and earnestness.
