Inheritance of Beauty & Kindness

TEXT|Lynn Tan , TRANSLATION | Eugenia Yang

Inheritance of Beauty & Kindness

Inheritance flows like water, in gentle streams that carry the pursuit of kindness and beauty along, while bringing people together and strengthening their friendships. The chairman of Taiwan Arts and Fashion Association, Yvonne Chou, together with her fellow NTNU Global Fashion Executive MBA (GF-EMBA) alumni Judy Wang and Ya-Lan Chen, co-established the alumni association. This initiative not only builds a strong network between alumni, but also channels the positive energy through collaborations with cross-disciplinary professionals. With her gentle heart, Chou continues to devote herself to charity and has passed on the same benevolence onto her two daughters, Joyce and Christine Hsiao, successfully imbuing their lives with warmth and kindness.

The Mission of Beauty

As both the chairman of Hsu Ling Investment Group Ltd. and Taiwan Arts and Fashion Association, Chou exudes a graceful beauty in her demeanor. Her each and every move radiates with a bright dominance, a multi-dimensional charm that has been cultivated over the years through her life experiences – her ceaseless pursuit of learning, her dedicated efforts towards the promotion of aesthetic knowledge and her long-term involvement in philanthropy. These enriching experiences have empowered her from within and further supported her to fulfill her life mission. In 2017, together with Ya-Lan Chen, who graduated from GF-EMBA program last year, and Judy Wang, who graduated in 2020, Chou initiated the establishment of the NTNU GF-EMBA Alumni Association, which consists of 150 members and is set to be officially launched in early 2024. “I enjoy taking on the challenge of going from 0 to 1. Through the integration process, I got the chance to meet elites and friends from different fields, and together, we will strive to elevate the Taiwanese fashion industry.” Mostly entrepreneurs, senior executives, brand managers and professionals, the members of the alumni association are from diverse industries such as fashion, arts, culture, technology, finance and design. Chou believes that by collaborating with cross-disciplinary professionals, the positive energy of the association can be spread throughout Taiwan. As she puts it, “One person may walk fast, but only a group can go far.”

Inheritance of Dreams

Her connection with the NTNU GF-EMBA program began when Chou had some free time when her two daughters studied abroad in the States. To gain new knowledge, broaden horizon and meet professionals from various fields, she applied for and successfully completed what is considered as one of the most challenging EMBA programs. This demonstrates Chou’s determination and execution when it comes to her plans once she sets her mind on it. “Over the past year, I’ve exchanged experiences and viewpoints with elites from various companies, which broke me out of my old patterns and widened my perspectives. The guidance of renowned professors and practical exercises offered by the courses have really taught me a lot.” The same commitment towards self-improvement can also be seen in her daughters, as her youngest child, Christine, already has her own plans for the future: “I have many ideas and things I want to do and I hope that one day I can start my own business. As for the details and plans, I’m still exploring them step by step.” Within the family, the inheritance is not just about the dreams, but also about the continuation of careers. Both Christine and Joyce are currently working at their father Robin Hsiao’s company, Doksa Investment Inc.. Chou’s eldest daughter, Joyce, mentions, “Our father is both a loving and strict parent when it comes to work. He loves us deeply but also has high expectations for us and I am extremely grateful for his strict guidance which has allowed me to improve rapidly. I hope that in the near future, I will be able to meet his expectations.” Sharing similar sentiments, Christine notes, “At work, our father trusts us a lot and gives us space to learn on our own. Although, whenever we make mistakes, he corrects us sternly, he is always available for advice when we have questions.”

The Value of Kindness

In addition to pursuing careers and dreams, the virtue of kindness is also an important inheritance of Chou’s family. “I always tell my daughters that it is hard to avoid negative things from happening in life, but never let these negative emotions affect you for too long. Instead, spend your time on other more valuable things.” Perhaps it is this exact positive and proactive mindset that has filled her life with continuous vibrancy and beauty. Meanwhile, both she and her husband have been actively involved in charity and philanthropy over the years. Chou previously served as a board member of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, a charitable organization that focuses on helping children and families of immigrants, and in 2020, she founded the Taipei Doksa Care Association, which not only assists individuals or families in urgent need but also carries a deeper purpose. “We combined resources from the professional counseling industry and young talent training programs to build individuals who are mentally and physically healthy, in the hopes of promoting positive social cycles and allowing only good deeds to happen on this land we all live on.” When asked how she passes on her philanthropic spirit on to the next generation, Chou replies, “Our entire family are Christians and my kids grew up surrounded by this charitable spirit. The love of Christ is unconditional, for it is about giving, regardless of how the other person responds. I particularly want to quote the words of Jesus – ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

A Heart of Warmth

Such a loving mindset is like the air that naturally permeates in Chou’s home. Sharing a good relationship with her younger sister, Joyce always lets her younger sibling have what she wants, even if they both set their eyes on the same item. Smiling sweetly, Christine admits, “Ever since we were kids, my sister has always taken good care of me. It feels like I grew up with two mothers, so when I saw that she found her happiness, I was genuinely happy for her and I wish my sister and brother-in-law a lifetime of happiness.” Thoughtful as she is, she also adds – “Now that my sister is married, I will spend more time with my parents.” Recently married in September, Joyce also shares a deep bond with her mother, as she notes, “My mother is a very wise person. Sometimes when I encounter problems, she tries to guide me towards the solution without telling me directly what to do. This has been very helpful for me when it comes to handling things in the future.” Speaking of her recent marriage, she recalls her father’s memorable advice given during the wedding. “With love, you two become one heart and mind, and nothing difficult can stand in your way. Your mother and I have been married for 28 years and we have followed this belief with our heart. Remember, the highest realm of marital relationship is that ‘Though you may annoy me a thousand times, I will still love you as if you are my first love!’” A humorous banter that marked the end of his speech and brought smiles to Joyce and her husband’s faces. In that moment, the love that holds Chou’s family together once again shows itself and warms the hearts of the guests who were blessed to witness the beautiful ceremony.
