In Style |

TRANSLATION | Eugenia Yang

Speaking of the 1960s, who comes to your mind first? Is it Jacqueline Kennedy in her pillbox hat, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Twiggy, or Jane Birkin? All these legendary figures shaped the fashion trends of their time, and the people rushed to imitate these iconic styles and impeccable charm. In this fast changing world, history and culture become an enrichment of our present and this muse for the collective that always never fails to inspire.

The French Way

In the late Sixties, fashion was influenced by the younger generation. Hippie and Bohemian style became the major trend. With her unrestrained, rebellious life attitude, Jane Birkin was an icon that established the classic French style. Casual jeans, Bohemian lace top, ponchos, mesmerizing prints and tie-dye shirts—it is as if we are reminiscing the passionate romance of the era, where Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg sang the beautiful melody of “Je t’aime moi non plus.”

Space Craze

Besides the love for the French style, there was also space-age fashion inspired by the 1960s Space Race. Fantasies about the astroworld can be seen everywhere, in films, media and fashion. The use of synthetic fiber and PVC materials were used widely, while shiny, plastic-like and metallic fabrics added a touch of futuristic style to the Sixties fashion. Like the unconventional designer Paco Rabanne and Italian-French designer Pierre Cardin, these symbolic figures of space-age fashion marked the beginning of the exploration in the 1960s.

Liberating Mini Skirts

With her iconic bob hairstyle, Mod makeup and thin figure, legendary model Twiggy was the face of the 1960 Youthquake. Embodying an innocent and yet rebellious style, she revolutionized women’s fashion with her signature mini skirt and gamine look. No longer restrained by the conservative, women began to put on shorter skirts and dresses. A part of the Youthquake movement, Mod beauty became the embodiment of youth, freedom and defiance, with traces of a meaningful era and the history of ready-to-wear.

The Leopard Print

By 1969, animal prints had become the major trend. Seductive and wild, the variety of exaggerated patterns came together as one, grand jungle party. The leopard print subverted the traditional female image, which was soft and tender, and made modern women appear more confident, independent and domineering. Perhaps some may think reminiscing the past cannot bring any change, but a girl can dream about slowing down time and returning to our favorite retro era. In the end, there is always something appealing about a passion that slowly grows and expands, reminding us of a mesmerizing time that we could never forget.
