He is a revered yet modest cardiologist; he exudes sentiments amidst his everyday rational contemplation. One might expect a conflicting personality, yet soon will be awed by the harmonic discord of his character. He is the director of the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, Director Kuan-Ming Chiu.

As we approach the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, we find ourselves enveloped by a profound sense of awe before the virtuoso physician who is imposing in stature. Naturally, the reputation of Director Kuan-Ming Chiu in the medical field precedes him. With a solemn sense of respect, we hope to deliver the compassionate side of this leading cardiologist to the readers.
Habits Forms Discipline
Following behind director Kuan-Ming Chiu as he moves around the hospital, the editor almost has to jog to keep up. The figure before them undoubtedly exhibits precision in time management.
“There are set goals and tasks to accomplish every day. I’ve always had the habit of setting my goals first and then working backward to determine when each task should be completed. It helps me to establish a lucid schedule for myself.” From the consistent daily morning rounds starting at 6 a.m. for over 30 years to performing cardiac surgeries on the frontline and even managing the administrative tasks of the entire Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, Director Kuan-Ming Chiu always achieves the optimal balance between quality and quantity. His achievements are attributed to his time management and rising early to start the day.
Back in 1993, Kuan-Ming Chiu was a sixth-year medical student who applied to an exchange program at Harvard University with top grades. Starting from the second day of the internship, he was required to participate in ward rounds at 6 a.m., with many preparatory tasks to complete before rounds. This shocking experience prompted Kuan-Ming Chiu to allocate his time precisely.
Moreover, to accumulate successful experience, he rigorously demanded himself to perform 500 surgeries in a year, rapidly accumulating his experience. At the age of forty, Kuan-Ming Chiu became an exceptional physician attributed to his extensive surgical experience, surpassing that of most others in a lifetime. “Habits can form disciplines,” Kuan-Ming Chiu remarked lightly, “ but to the editors, we hear the conviction of an extremely disciplined and successful person. If he hadn’t turned his habits into the discipline of a master of time management, how could he persist in high-intensity and compact routines year after year?

Rationality With Sensibility
“I do want to succeed. Success is about giving myself the right to choose and walk the path I want. Surgery is the most productive and efficient way to alter the fate of patients. I must then absorb more nutrients, perform more surgeries, build confidence, and meet the expectations entrusted by the patients. Practice makes perfect, ”How fortunate is it to have a doctor who views their profession as a calling and has a profound sense of duty?
“It’s basically ‘choosing what you love and being loyal to your choice.’” Kuan-Ming Chiu emphasized. “When you treat your profession as a calling, a sense of duty naturally forms, especially for surgeons whose problems to solve may be life-changing for their patients.”
Speaking of patients, Kuan-Ming Chiu’s tone softened, “Morning rounds are great. Did you know? Inpatients usually wake up very early because after a night of various tests and anticipation, they are always eager to hear results and treatment plans. Even chats can alleviate the patients’ emotions.” It is the comprehensive observation and empathy that patients would yearn for from a compassionate doctor, right?

The Guru of Mind-Body Wellness
Director Kuan-Ming Chiu is not merely an astute surgeon who brings a beacon of light to minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Director Kuan-Ming Chiu has led Far Eastern Memorial Hospital to greater heights since he was appointed hospital director. He has managed the hospital with remarkable achievements.
Director Kuan-Ming Chiu briefly summarized his management philosophy: “Management, at its core, is a public issue, a continuous process of communication with people, striving to get more people to care about public affairs. Leading a team means knowing how to inspire others and achieve common goals together.” For example, he hopes that “hospital colleagues are confident to bring their family members to the hospital for treatment,” which requires the concerted efforts of many departments and colleagues within the hospital. It would be difficult to achieve without consensus. Today, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital has gradually achieved such achievements in many departments, led by the cardiology department, with an outstanding reputation.
To lead a hospital while being a leading authority in Taiwan’s cardiology field, Kuan-Ming Chiu self-mocked his health regimen views with the “self-awareness of a middle-aged man” and demands persistence from himself. Starting from trail hiking a few years ago to conquering “Hundred-peaks,” he understands as a cardiologist, the importance of exercising cardiopulmonary functions. Instead of hiking distance, “altitude” is the key.
It is essential to invest and consolidate health foundations upon reaching middle age. “Hiking would do. Hiking not only trains your body but also screens the body for signs of wheezy, stuffy, or painful chests. During the process of climbing and ascending, it helps to calm the mind, focus on inner dialogue, and relieve negativity.” We should keep this cardiopulmonary advice from the leading cardiac surgeon in Taiwan by heart and put it to action.
