“Beauty Speaks for Itself,” a phrase derived from a renowned passage in Zhuangzi’s Knowledge Rambling in the North, underscoring the ineffable beauty of the natural world. The National Palace Museum in Taipei collaborated with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and VAN CLEEF & ARPELS to curate a remarkable exhibition centered around philosophical aesthetics, showcasing the beauty of Eastern and Western craftsmanship across various eras and cultural contexts. The exhibition features over 260 exquisite art pieces, including ceramics, jade, home décor, porcelain, textiles, sculpture, graphic art, jewelry, and timepieces. The exhibition space echoes with its philosophical ethos, inviting an immersive experience in a captivating journey through the intertwining realms of nature and art.

This exhibition is a collaborative endeavor curated by the National Palace Museum, Béatrice Quette of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and Alexandrine Maviel Sonet, the Collection Director of VAN CLEEF & ARPELS. Melding the unparalleled collections of these three institutions, it transcends time, cultural contexts, and artistic forms, exploring the resonances between art through craftsmanship and materiality. The exhibition is divided into five thematic zones: “The Essence of Nature,” “The Tangible and Intangible,” “Fantastical Realms,” “Mysteries and Enigmas,” and “A Spectrum of Colors,” each vividly illustrating the classic aesthetics born from the interplay of Eastern and Western cultures.

The exhibition space, designed by architect Tsuyoshi Tane, draws inspiration from traditional shadow puppetry, using layered light and silhouettes to create a captivating atmosphere that hovers between reality and dream. Presented in an immersive “tableaux” style, the design weaves together the dimensions of time and space through striking color effects, intensifying the visual dialogue between Eastern and Western art, and forming a cohesive narrative experience that enchants the senses.

Three pieces under the spotlight each represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship from distinct cultural backgrounds. The National Palace Museum’s “Revolving Openwork Vase with Dragon and Lotus Decoration in Yangcai Painted Enamels” showcases the intricate, playful multi-layered rotating structure of the Qianlong period, exemplifying the complexity and artistry of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship. From the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the “Buire de Blois” by Sèvres National Ceramics Factory demonstrates the peak of French decorative arts with its refined porcelain and exquisite detailing. VAN CLEEF & ARPELS’ iconic Zip Necklace, which can be transformed into a bracelet, merges practicality with jewelry artistry, transforming the zipper design of the 1930s into a symbol of innovation in jewelry history, and standing as one of the exhibition’s highlights.
