Refusing the Final Curtain, Redefining Sustainability in the Performing Arts Industry
Interview | Yuan Hao-Cheng, Executive Director, Mountain Studio Production & Design
On stage, a performance may come to an end in countless ways. For its set, however, there is often only one ending: demolition.Meticulously crafted over months of design and construction, elaborate stage sets are frequently dismantled within hours after the final performance, smashed apart and cleared away with little hesitation. It was a scene Yuan Hao-Cheng had witnessed since his student days in the Department of Theatre Design at the Taipei National University of the Arts. The wooden structures he and his classmates had spent countless late nights building would, in the blink of an eye, become little more than waste waiting to be hauled away. At the time, there was little he could do to change the outcome, but the quiet sense of loss never left him. After graduation, as he began working professionally, Yuan came to a realisation that would ultimately shape his career: within the performing arts industry, meaningful change can only happen when both design and production are considered as one. Only by overseeing both ends of the process could the fate of countless objects—discarded despite still having value—be rewritten. That conviction became the starting point of Mountain Studio Production & Design.

Giving New Life to Every Material
Mountain Studio’s commitment to sustainability can be traced back long before the company was founded. As a child, Yuan simply enjoyed sorting and collecting reusable materials. Once he entered the theatre world, that personal habit naturally evolved into a philosophy of valuing every resource.Laughing at the memory, he recalls how he and his senior classmates jokingly referred to themselves as the theatre’s “vultures.” Whenever a production struck its set, they would wait beside the rubbish trucks, salvaging whatever could still be used. To them, every timber panel saved and every nail carefully removed was something worth keeping. For Yuan, sustainability has never been a marketing slogan or a response to industry trends. It is simply a belief that has always felt self-evident.
Turning that belief into reality required more than good intentions. Mountain Studio established its own woodworking factory, creating a shared production platform where theatre companies could exchange, repurpose or modify existing props, reducing costs while extending the lifespan of materials. The company also introduced 3D modelling, laser-cutting technology and CNC machining to optimise material planning. Through precise digital fabrication, every sheet of timber is calculated with remarkable accuracy, significantly reducing offcuts that would otherwise become unusable waste.Even the smallest pieces of leftover wood rarely go to waste. Fragments that can no longer serve theatrical productions are carefully transformed into handcrafted wands and historical-style weapons inspired by fantasy literature. Materials once destined for landfill are instead reborn as objects of craftsmanship and artistic value, each carrying a new purpose beyond its original life.

Finding Opportunity Through Commercial Reality
What may once have seemed like an idealistic belief has, in recent years, found unexpected momentum as Taiwan places increasing emphasis on ESG initiatives and carbon accounting. Sustainability is no longer simply a slogan; it has become a shared language through which Mountain Studio and its clients engage in meaningful dialogue. Not every conversation is straightforward. Many clients still begin with the expectation that every project should present an entirely original visual identity. Over time, however, Yuan has developed the confidence to guide those discussions in a different direction. On one hand, he draws upon successful past projects to demonstrate what is possible. On the other, he presents a compelling case from both aesthetic and commercial perspectives, showing that thoughtfully combining reclaimed modular structures with existing materials can achieve results every bit as refined as building from scratch.Instilling the question of Can this be used again? into a team’s creative mindset, however, is not something that happens overnight.Adjacent to the workshop, Yuan has established a physical warehouse housing more than two to three thousand vintage objects, props and reclaimed materials. Rather than encouraging every new project to begin with a blank slate, he hopes the next generation of designers will learn to see the creative potential within what already exists—to reinterpret familiar objects through the lens of contemporary culture and emerging aesthetics, giving them renewed relevance for a new era.

Finding Balance in Sustainability
Sustainability isn’t a slogan to be followed blindly,” Yuan says. “It’s a quadrant that requires balance. The philosophy stems from Mountain Studio’s recent collaboration with 52PRO!, a renowned theatre company in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa district.During the residency, Yuan noticed that while the Japanese production team reduced food waste by providing shared boxed meals for the entire crew, they continued to use disposable tableware. At first glance, the practice appeared contradictory. Yet a closer understanding revealed a different reality. Japan’s highly developed recycling infrastructure meant that washing reusable tableware would consume more labour, water and overall resources than responsibly recycling disposable alternatives. The experience fundamentally reshaped his understanding of sustainability. There is no universal formula. Every decision must be evaluated within its own context, balancing carbon emissions, labour requirements, financial cost and available infrastructure.Pursuing sustainability purely for appearances can easily become counterproductive. Transporting reclaimed stage materials across long distances simply to avoid purchasing new ones, for example, may ultimately generate greater transportation costs and carbon emissions than the materials themselves—defeating the very purpose of sustainable practice.Carrying this balanced philosophy forward, Mountain Studio has gradually expanded beyond the performing arts industry into everyday life. Whether through the Mountain Studio Second-hand Bookstore, established in its early years, or the café space completed this year, each new venture reflects the same ambition: to transform the visual language of the stage and objects rich with history into spaces that people can experience in their daily lives.Through these tangible initiatives, Mountain Studio demonstrates that sustainability need not come at the expense of aesthetics or commercial viability. Instead, beauty, business and social value can coexist—offering a meaningful path forward for Taiwan’s performing arts industry to continue exploring.
