From Legacy to Innovation: Expanding Taiwan’s Presence on the Global Art Map

Artistic legacy is never simply about carrying forward what came before; it is an ongoing dialogue with the times. In 1992, Tina Keng founded Tina Keng Gallery, drawing on her deep knowledge of art and discerning eye for artists to establish the gallery as an important presence in Taiwan’s art scene. In 2009, her daughter, Shelly Wu, founded TKG+, extending that vision into contemporary art. With a focus on a new generation of artists, she began charting another path toward greater international engagement. Over the course of her 17-year career in the art world, Wu has navigated differences with her mother over how a gallery should be run, gradually finding common ground while defining a direction of her own. Drawing on the artistic foundations built across two generations, she has inherited more than what her mother established before her: she has also taken on the mission of bringing Taiwanese art to a wider international audience. Today, with Taiwan as her base and an increasingly global outlook, Wu continues to work alongside contemporary artists, seeking greater visibility and influence for Taiwanese art within a rapidly evolving global art landscape.
美學視野雙重養成
Shelly 大學時在紐約主修平面設計，這段經歷使她在踏入畫廊產業之初，便具備不同於傳統經營者的思維與國際視野。回台後，她跟隨母親的腳步學習，先到耿畫廊從基層實務磨練，擔任母親的助理長達五、六年之久；這段期間，她發揮專業能力，針對當時台灣藝術界在展覽視覺包裝及出版品上的問題提出改善方向，奠定了扎實的實務經驗。
為了進一步深化對市場與學術脈絡的掌握，她於 2008 年赴新加坡蘇富比藝術學院進修亞洲當代藝術史。當她萌生自己成立畫廊的念頭並向母親提出時，母親不僅非常支持，更對女兒說：「我的時代已經漸漸過去，這是新的時代，要靠妳自己的努力。」2009 年，她創立的 TKG+，取自耿畫廊Tina Keng Gallery的英文縮寫，並加上 +，象徵著耿畫廊自 1992 年起關注台灣現代藝術，到 TKG+ 進一步聚焦亞洲當代藝術，展現新世代的無限可能。
Shaping an Aesthetic Vision
Wu studied graphic design in New York, an experience that gave her a distinct perspective and international outlook when she first entered the gallery world. After returning to Taiwan, she began learning the business alongside her mother, starting from the ground up at Tina Keng Gallery and spending five to six years as her assistant. During this time, Wu drew on her design training to rethink aspects of exhibition presentation and art publications that she felt could be improved within Taiwan’s art scene, while gaining invaluable hands-on experience in gallery operations.
Seeking a deeper understanding of both the art market and its academic context, Wu went on to study Asian contemporary art history at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in Singapore in 2008. When she later told her mother that she wanted to establish a gallery of her own, the response was unequivocally supportive. “My era is gradually passing,” her mother told her. “This is a new era. You have to make your own way.”
風浪之中共生淬煉
然而，經營一個全新品牌並非易事。Shelly 坦言，她面臨最大的挑戰除了畫廊初期的經濟赤字，與母親在工作理念及母女關係間的緊張狀態也是一大問題。
當吳悅宇逐漸將重心轉往自己的品牌、不再全職擔任母親的得力助手時，兩人在分工與情感期待上出現了明顯的拉扯。面對這股衝突，她選擇理性直面，她曾主動向母親坦言，如果母親希望她留在身邊協助耿畫廊，她隨時可以停下自己的品牌。
在那次彼此坦誠溝通後，母親重整思緒，反而堅定地告訴她應該繼續前行。有了這份信任與支持後，母女倆化解了張力，並確立了更成熟的策略聯盟，吳悅宇也得以無後顧之憂地在外部市場開創出一片新天地。
Growing Through Challenges
Building a new brand, however, was anything but easy. For Wu, the challenges extended well beyond the financial pressures of TKG+’s early years. Differences in professional philosophy, compounded by the complexities of their relationship as mother and daughter, also created considerable tension. As Wu gradually shifted her attention toward her own gallery and was no longer working full-time as her mother’s right hand, the two found themselves negotiating new boundaries between professional responsibilities and personal expectations. Wu chose to address the tension directly. At one point, she told her mother that if what she truly wanted was for her daughter to remain by her side and help run Tina Keng Gallery, she was prepared to put her own venture on hold.
That candid conversation became a turning point. After reflecting on what had been said, her mother instead firmly encouraged her to continue on her own path. With that trust and support, the tension between them began to ease, eventually giving way to a more mature strategic partnership. It also gave Wu the confidence and freedom to develop TKG+ and explore new opportunities in the wider art market.
支線交匯「合一」新局
回顧這十七年來，TKG+ 深耕當代語彙、陪伴無數青年藝術家站穩腳步。從扎根台灣出發，向外拓展至亞洲脈絡；近年更在大環境趨勢下，水到渠成地走上國際，如 2024 年首度率領優秀藝術家赴瑞士參與巴賽爾藝術博覽會（Art Basel），今年（2026）再度參展，在頂級殿堂上展現實力。
面對即將迎來的二十週年，Shelly 對下一個十年有著清晰的「合一」藍圖。她認為，TKG+ 與耿畫廊本為一體，當年僅是因應時代的分支探索；如今隨著團隊與市場成熟，她期盼這條支線能與「母體」耿畫廊再度交匯。
隨著近年台灣備受國際關注以及年輕藏家的投入，西方頂級畫廊也開始正視台灣本地市場。下一個階段，TKG+ 將專注於引進優秀西方藝術家，並立足在地收藏價值觀，讓台灣與國際在藝術產業中展開真正對等的對話。
Two Paths Converge
Over the past 17 years, TKG+ has developed a strong contemporary focus while working closely with numerous emerging artists as they established their practices. Rooted in Taiwan, the gallery gradually expanded into the broader Asian art landscape before moving onto the international stage as the market evolved. In 2024, TKG+ made its debut at Art Basel in Switzerland, presenting its artists at one of the world’s leading art fairs. The gallery returned in 2026, further strengthening its presence on the international stage.
As TKG+ looks ahead to its 20th anniversary, Wu has a clear vision for the decade to come: bringing the two galleries back together. To her, TKG+ and Tina Keng Gallery have always been part of the same whole; their separate paths were simply a response to the needs of a particular moment. Now, with both the team and the market having matured, she hopes that the two paths can converge once again.
In recent years, Taiwan has attracted growing international attention, while the emergence of a younger generation of collectors has brought fresh momentum to the local art market. Leading Western galleries, too, are beginning to take Taiwan’s market more seriously. In its next chapter, TKG+ will focus on bringing outstanding Western artists to Taiwan while remaining grounded in the values and perspectives of local collectors—creating the conditions for Taiwan and the international art world to engage in a genuinely equal dialogue.
