Classics  Beyond Time

Fall/Winter 2026 Bags, Recast for a New Era

A classic survives by changing with time. This season, as new creative directors step into storied houses, familiar signatures are being seen from a different angle. Proportions shift. Materials become softer, surfaces more expressive, colors less expected. What returns is rarely a replica of the past.

Instead, designers are working from shapes and details already embedded in a house’s history, adjusting them to the way people dress and carry things now. Time, in that sense, becomes part of the design itself—not something to preserve intact, but something to work with.

LOUIS VUITTON

A bag once needed a decade, sometimes two, before anyone dared call it a classic. That definition feels less fixed today. A strong silhouette and an instantly recognizable attitude can make a new design part of a house’s visual language much sooner. The Louis Vuitton Multipass is one such example. First introduced in the Cruise 2026 womenswear collection, it brings together clean lines and a certain softness, landing somewhere between polish and ease. Versions in deep black and muted vanilla sit alongside the house’s signature Monogram, while a detachable shoulder strap, braided metal chain and short top handle allow the bag to be worn in several ways. Its modern, adaptable character has also made it a favorite among a number of high-profile women, including BLACKPINK’s Lisa, Shin Min-a, Jun Ji-hyun and Liu Yifei. In a relatively short span, the Multipass has begun to establish itself alongside Louis Vuitton signatures such as the Petite Malle and Side Trunk. For Fall/Winter 2026, it returns in a miniature version. The leather carries a faint sheen and a finely crackled surface—an imperfect finish that gives the precise silhouette a little more warmth.

DIOR

Classics rarely stay untouched for long. A change of designer is often enough to alter their posture.

Introduced in 2023, the Dior Toujours is reworked this year by Jonathan Anderson as the Dior Toujours Hobo. The original tote’s firmer, more structured body gives way to a softer outline, with the kind of natural slouch that has become increasingly central to contemporary handbag design. The bag keeps a compact, squared base, but the lines now curve inward and around the body, creating a rounder, more enveloping shape. Cannage quilting remains unmistakably Dior, giving continuity to an otherwise noticeably relaxed silhouette. The way it is carried has changed as well. Where the Toujours leaned more strongly toward a hand-held format, the Hobo introduces a detachable strap for shoulder wear, with the option to carry it by hand when preferred. A CD Lock closure and the “D, I, O, R” charms provide familiar accents without overpowering the shape.Rendered in lambskin and suede, the bag comes in soft pink, icy blue and pale yellow, as well as deeper burgundy and black. The lighter shades are particularly striking for autumn and winter, bringing a little brightness into a season usually associated with darker tones.

GUCCI

Gucci’s connection to the equestrian world stretches back to the house’s early years, and few details carry that history as clearly as the Horsebit. Introduced on the Horsebit loafer in 1953, the metal motif gradually became one of the brand’s most recognizable signatures, moving from shoes to handbags, belts and leather goods. The Horsebit Duomo gives the emblem a poised, ladylike setting. Its top-handle silhouette is crafted in softly grained calfskin with a polished finish, while the Horsebit hardware sits at the center of an otherwise restrained design. It can also be worn on the shoulder or across the body, making the structured shape more adaptable than it first appears. The Horsebit Ristretto takes a different route. Its name comes from ristretto, the short and intensely concentrated Italian espresso—a fitting reference for a bag that condenses Gucci’s equestrian code into a sharper, more compact form. Here, the body stretches horizontally, becoming flatter and more elongated. A detachable metal chain and leather strap allow it to shift between shoulder bag, crossbody and clutch. The mood changes easily with it, from day to evening, without losing the clarity of the original Horsebit.

FENDI

The Fendi Baguette began with an ordinary gesture: a baguette tucked casually under the arm. That sense of ease became part of the bag’s identity from the start. Its place in pop culture was later sealed by Sex and the City and the now-famous line: “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette.” First introduced in the late 1990s, the compact silhouette stood out during an era dominated by minimalism. Its shape was simple, but the treatments rarely were. Bold colors, embroidery, unusual textures and decorative surfaces turned the Baguette into an endlessly changeable object.Fall/Winter 2026 brings it back into focus as Maria Grazia Chiuri returns to Fendi, the house where her career first began, following years at Valentino and Dior. Her attention turns to the original 1997 Baguette, reference 26424. Rather than reinventing the shape entirely, she works into it—preserving its familiar proportions while introducing hand embroidery, beadwork and mirrored surfaces.

The Double-F clasp changes too. Chiuri has described the logo as a signature rather than decoration, and her collaboration with graphic designer Leonardo Sonnoli follows that idea closely. The hardware becomes longer, flatter and more horizontal, less like an applied emblem and more integrated into the line of the bag itself.Elsewhere, crackled leather and stencil-print finishes bring a quieter texture to the collection. The Baguette still reads immediately as Fendi. It simply speaks more softly this season.

BOTTEGA VENETA

The Lauren 1980 remains one of Bottega Veneta’s most recognizable archive-inspired bags. Built from the house’s signature Intrecciato weave, it has a softness that comes as much from construction as from material. The leather strips are woven by hand, allowing the body to fall naturally rather than hold a rigid shape.A curved top frame gives the bag definition without interrupting that sense of ease. Different sizes and the addition of metal chain straps have also helped move the Lauren 1980 beyond its earlier association with evening dressing. It now sits comfortably in a more everyday wardrobe. The Madison follows another thread in the house’s history. Its name refers to Bottega Veneta’s first boutique opened near Madison Avenue in 1972, drawing attention back to an early chapter of the brand. For Fall/Winter 2026, Louise Trotter revisits the design with a softer, more tactile construction. Smooth lambskin is replaced by Nappa Plume leather worked in Intrecciato, while a sliding metal chain with a leather shoulder pad makes the bag easier to wear for longer periods. A Knot detail finishes the design.Nothing feels overly reworked. The changes are subtle, but enough to shift the bag firmly into the present.

PRADA

The Prada Galleria has been evolving since its introduction in 2007. Named after Prada’s historic boutique in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, it has never relied on a single fixed version of itself. The upright, structured silhouette has appeared in East-West proportions; signature Saffiano leather has been joined by gradient finishes and more experimental treatments. The long handles and triangular Prada logo remain familiar, even as the surfaces and proportions continue to change. That progression becomes more pronounced for Fall/Winter 2026. This season, the Galleria is treated with devoré techniques that create irregular, partially eroded effects across the surface. Chemical processing and double-faced materials produce uneven textures that can appear scorched, worn away or almost moth-eaten.The effect is deliberately imperfect. On a bag so closely associated with polish and structure, that tension feels especially sharp.

BURBERRY

Few Burberry signatures are as deeply embedded in the house’s identity as the Burberry Check. First used as a trench-coat lining in the 1920s, the pattern gradually moved onto bags and accessories, where it has continued to change with each new shape.Recent versions place the check across a wide range of silhouettes, from the curved Primrose to bucket bags and bowling styles. The pattern stays familiar; the proportions around it keep shifting. For Fall/Winter 2026, Burberry moves beyond the classic beige with a warmer, deeper chocolate brown. The richer palette gives the check more weight and depth, replacing some of its traditional lightness with a mood better suited to the season. It is a small change, but an effective one. The check remains instantly recognizable, only darker, denser and more grounded than before.
