Beyond the Smiles
Yani Tseng
Last October, Yani Tseng, affectionately known as the “Smiling Queen of Golf,” won the Wistron Ladies Open, ending a title drought of 4,291 days. This year, she returns to the national team for the first time in twenty years to compete at the Asian Games in Nagoya, just as enya Fashion Queen celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Twenty years can feel both long and short, but they are years no one can take a shortcut through. This glorious October, may everyone still striving in life keep moving forward and continue to shine.

The Long Road Back
When Yani speaks about the Wistron Ladies Open in October 2025, she recalls ending a title drought that had lasted 4,291 days. During those eleven years, many of her fellow players and friends had left the game. She stayed.“Deep down, I knew I still hadn’t got back to playing golf with the love I once had for it.”That thought was harder to let go of than any setback. Again and again, she asked herself whether she could still win. And again and again, she kept practising through the doubt.
This year, she returned to the U.S. Women’s Open and the AIG Women’s Open. She is also back in her national team jersey for the Asian Games in Nagoya, twenty years after she and Chan Shih-chang competed at the Doha Asian Games. This time, both return as professional golfers.Yani has also included the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in her plans. Competing at the Olympics was an opportunity that eluded her during her peak years. She says that voicing this goal has made her more willing to face it head-on. Sometimes, pressure is the most honest motivation.

Alone at the Top
At 22, Yani was world No. 1, a position she held for 109 consecutive weeks. The world saw the queen of golf; she was slowly becoming someone who did not dare to rest. She gave all her time to golf. Every performance came under scrutiny, and when she played badly, she knew criticism would follow. At times, practice became an obsession. She would keep going until it was dark, no longer knowing what she was doing. She once sought advice from a former world No. 1, who told her that being No. 1 was the loneliest position in the world. She did not understand at the time. Later, she came to realise that the people who stayed by her side were her family and closest friends.
At her lowest, she learned seated meditation and insight meditation. She also kept a “happiness bankbook,” gradually learning to notice what she had done well.Filmed over five years, the documentary Beyond the Smiles: Yani Tseng captures her deepest struggles and the moment she won again. Yani says she cried for a full hour the first time she watched it. There were moments she had forgotten and others she had not dared to revisit. It shows a side of her that she rarely reveals in public. She also shares her daily eating routine with readers. Before practice, she eats a rice ball to fuel up on carbohydrates. Her meals combine two portions of starchy foods with one portion of meat, and she has more protein after practice. She loves hot pot, but tries to choose whole, minimally processed foods and drink less broth. Keeping up healthy daily habits is a practice in itself.

Being There for Herself
After her years at the top, Yani went through a prolonged slump. It took her several years to make the transition to putting left-handed. The process was far from easy, but she says learning to manage her emotions is a lifelong task. As long as you are alive, there is hope.To anyone going through a difficult time and wondering whether it is already too late, she wants to say:“It really is okay if things aren’t going well right now. Start by putting how you feel first. Loving yourself isn’t selfish. When you learn to love yourself, you become better able to love others.”
She sought guidance through prayer and worship, and went to counselling. In the end, she realised that she had to be there for herself throughout the journey. Her family and friends, meanwhile, often had more faith in her than she had in herself.“Resting helps you keep going for longer,” she says. “It doesn’t mean giving up.”

Smiling Through Rain and Sun
A light rain was falling when we began our shoot with Yani at the Taipei Marriott Hotel. Then, suddenly, the sun came out, its warmth falling gently on her in front of the camera. Autumn weather can change in an instant, but it can also bring surprises.“One day, when you want to see the sun again, you’ll find the courage to take that step,” Yani says.
These days, she is no longer in such a hurry to define herself by her results. Instead, she wants to share what she has learned over the past ten years with everyone who is still trying: your emotions may rise and fall, but before the next shot, you have to learn to regain your composure. These are words of reassurance from Yani, for herself and for everyone still waiting for the sun.
